February 18
Isaiah 58:6 – Is this not the fast I choose: to loose the bonds of injustice, to undo the thongs of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover them, and not to hide yourself from your own kin?
I think it is easy to think of Lent as an ongoing, private conversation between you and God. But, this passage reminds us of the communal nature of our faith – how our faithful walk with God involves assisting our neighbors in the removal of the barriers they are facing.
Prayer Gracious and merciful God, help my eyes see the plight of my neighbors more clearly. AMEN.
