When a child can’t walk and doesn’t have access to a wheelchair or a walker, they struggle to be part of the community. They are left behind by other kids because they can’t keep up, and they never make it to school because it’s too far away. They depend on others to get anywhere beyond their front door… And if an assistive device isn’t working properly or is broken, it can cause even more pain and harm to an already vulnerable child.
Rose’s wheelchair is rusting, dented, and it’s failing her. Rose is a bright and engaged 8-year-old girl who loves going to school. She was born with spina bifida, and her legs and arms are extremely weak. She needs her wheelchair to get around, but it’s hurting her.
Rose’s wheelchair has little padding, no footrests, or headrest. As a result, Rose’s spine is bending further and further forward. Her chin is almost on her chest, and she even has trouble breathing. Sometimes, her foot shakes uncontrollably with no place to rest it.
Rose desperately needs a new wheelchair, but her loving parents are already struggling to keep their three children fed, clothed, and in school. There’s no way they can save enough money to replace Rose’s wheelchair.
