Joyce has dreams. She wants to be a math teacher when she grows up. She loves school, but that love has been crowded out by fear.
The fear showed up when strange things started happening to Joyce's vision. Joyce's grandma, Nasineya, realized Joyce had cataracts, but she couldn’t afford the medical care Joyce needed.
Nasineya told us, “Joyce stopped going to school because of her eye problems.” Joyce couldn’t see the board, and she feared being hit by a car on her way to and from school. “I miss school,” Joyce said.
Nasineya watched her granddaughter’s spirit shrink as Joyce’s eyesight got worse.
