Families have escaped the floodwaters with only what they could carry. For the families we serve, that means carrying their child who has a disability.

SITUATION REPORT

  • Recent flooding in northern Cameroon has affected over 400,000 people – 139,000 of them are young children
  • Over 200,000 people are facing acute food insecurity, and malnutrition is on the rise
  • 82,000 hectares of farmland have been destroyed, worsening food insecurity
  • Over 56,000 homes have been destroyed. 262 schools and 65 health centres have been damaged

“When the water reached a certain level, it was absolutely necessary to leave to find shelter elsewhere. Since my child could not walk, we had to carry him and take with us only the essential materials. Even his wheelchair was swept away by the waters.”
– Haoua, mother of a child with disability

URGENT NEED

Children and families are struggling to access food and clean water in the wake of these floods. They desperately need vital medical care and trauma support. Assistive devices have been swept away or destroyed, leaving children with disabilities isolated and dependent. Temporary shelters are inaccessible, even for those with walkers and wheelchairs.

Makeshift tents made of plastic and sticks set up next to each other and caption that reads, 'With their homes destroyed, families are living in makeshift camps.'
