Blinding trachoma spreads through personal contact. Children are most at risk.
Flies are drawn to the secretion from eyes and transmit the infection from person to person.
Trachoma begins with itchy, teary, uncomfortable eyes and eventually causes extreme pain. The infection causes tiny cuts on the underside of the eyelid and leads to scar tissue as the cuts heal.
The scars pull the eyelid until the eyelashes point inward and scrape the delicate cornea, causing corneal scarring and eventually leading to permanent blindness.

Surgery
Surgery corrects the eyelids, in the advanced stage of the disease, to stop pain and prevent permanent damage.

Environment
Improved sanitation, including latrines and clean water, can dramatically reduce infection.
